The Falkenburg family was nominated by their friend Katie Karasek. Here is their story as told beautifully by Katie:
“As a child of a military father, I know that that lifestyle can be a true test of character. I can’t say enough how much Mary and Jay Falkenburg pass that test everyday. Jay is completely committed to his job and undoubtedly would give his life for his country, but finding Mary has given a bigger meaning to why he would give it all. So many people with demanding jobs will completely lose themselves in it. I am always so happy to see the Falkenburgs and see that when Jay is home, he is truly HOME: physically and emotionally. I couldn’t be more proud to call these people my friends.
I worked with Mary Falkenburg at Pleasantville Elementary School and am constantly amazed at the proud and graceful way her family has handled Jay’s deployment. While Mary and Jay were dating, I watched Mary handle his deployment with strength. It wouldn’t be surprising to see someone in this situation fall apart and be depressed, but she and Jay are each other’s true loves and knowing they would be reunited soon got them through that extremely tough year.
We were all overjoyed for Mary when Jay returned! Jay truly treats Mary like a queen and I remember the whole staff at Pleasantville being so happy for Mary when she came in with her dream sapphire engagement ring from her man. I will never forget the ear to ear smile on Mary’s face when she told me that she and Jay were going to get married!
They then had a beautiful wedding in August of 2012 and an even more beautiful baby girl named Lily in July of 2013. Only 4 months after Lily’s birth, Jay was deployed for 10 months to the Middle East again. While Jay was gone, Mary moved in with her parents so she had support while she was raising Lily as a full time teacher, sold their old house, and even bought a new home closer to their support network. Mary is a truly inspiring woman to have taken all of that on and does it all without complaining.
The Falkenburg family has truly overcome obstacles to which many families cannot begin to relate. Mary and Jay are best friends, partners through everything that comes their way, and totally in love with each other. They went down many paths in life before they were lead to each other and I can’t be happier that they have created their happily ever after. ”
